2009
The ninth world games were held in Boise, Idaho with 3000 athletes in attendance. For the first time at a winter games, athletes with severe disabilities showed off what they were able to do for medals!
2005
THis was the first wunter games to be held in Asia-Nagano, Japan. 2200 athletes competed in 7 sports
2001
2000 athletes went to Anchorage, Alaska to compete at the seventh world games in winter sports. Snowshoeing and snowboarding were added to the sports list.
1997
The sixth games took place in Torono, ONtario, Canada. These were the second games outside the USA. Floor Hockey was added, and snowshoeng was a demonstration sport.
1993
This was the very first SPecial Olympics world-level competition to be held outside the USA. The fifth winter games took place in Saltzburg/Schladming, Austria. 1550 athletes competed in 4 sports.
1989
The fourth games were held in Reno,Nevada and Squaw Valley, Claifornia with 4 sports being contested. The athlete numbers broke the 1000-athlete mark for the first ime at a world games in winter sports.
1985
The third games were held in Park City, Utah with 825 athletes in attendance. The skiing events added 1k cross country race and downhill ski added skill levels such as intermediate and advanced.
